Church Book Club
Following its inaugural meeting in October 2008, our Church Book Club/Reading Group met to review its first book on 11th November 2008. Click on the Book Club Reviews link on the left to view their comments on this and other books they have read.
All are welcome to attend and get a feel for
the group whether you have read the current
book being studied or not. Please do join
them if you are interested. The group meets
about every 5-6 weeks usually in a member’s
house and each time someone from the
group decides on the following book to read.
The aim is to have fun, enjoy reading,
sometimes outside of your comfort zone,
and find out what others thought of the
books that have been considered. Even if you cannot make the group you are welcome to read along with us and let us know your thoughts.
This page provides details about the group's meetings and other books up for consideration as well as a link to the Book Reviews pages.
Current Books and Planned Meetings
The Church Book Club will next meet at a member’s house on Tuesday 2nd May at 8:00pm to discuss the books recommended by members - notably Scoop by Evelyn Waugh and The Ghost Writer by Robert Harris.
For details of the venue please ring Mary Blackwell on 07514 053294 or refer to our weekly Church news sheet.
See our weekly Church news sheet distributed most Sundays at Church, for more details about the next meeting’s venue nearer the meeting date.
The Book Club is a relaxed gathering where many topics apart from books are discussed. Its membership is ecumenical. All are welcome even if you haven’t read the book in advance.
Last month's offering, The Silk Merchant's Daughter, by Dinah Jefferies, was praised for its descriptions of Vietnam and its attention to 1950s history of the country, but the narrative and characterization had been less satisfactory.
Short reviews of several books discussed by the group are listed on the Book Club Reviews pages.
